“Here we go.” Tristan handed her a cool, wet washer with one hand while holding back her hair with the other.

A thumb stroked the base of her scar and she held her breath, waiting for him to say something. When he didn’t, she closed her eyes as he leaned and placed a soft kiss against the melted, contorted skin that was her ear.

Not even the guys had been allowed a glimpse of her scars, yet this single gesture from a man who’d loved her all his life sent the Milky Way rippling through her body and across her soul.

He dropped her hair and straightened, as she opened her eyes and wiped the wet cloth across her mouth.

“I thought the stupid migraine was gone . . . but . . .” She leaned over the toilette bowl and wretched again.

“Is there anything I can get you from the pharmacy?” Tristan asked, his voice laced with concern and helplessness.

Issi shook her head. “No thanks. I need rest… no bright lights . . . I think I’m okay now.” She struggled to her feet.

Tristan wrapped an arm around her waist and helped her to the basin before letting go. She wiped her face then rinsed her mouth.

“Come, you need to lie down.”

“Don’t we need to meet with that investigator?” Issi’s world spun.

“It can wait.” He guided her out of the bathroom and to the spare bedroom where he laid her down, then, as though it was the natural thing to do, he slid in behind her and pulled her into his warm, hard body.

Issi’s throbbing head told her to push him away. Who did he think he was, taking advantage like this—but her heart shushed it. Her instincts confirmed that Tristan, unlike Doyle, would not harm her and another part recognized that she was finally where she belonged.

Tristan shifted then tugged on her shoulder to get her to turn and face him. Issi squinted as their faces came nose to nose. Tristan gently stroked an index finger up her cheek and down her jaw.

“You’re sure he won’t harm anyone else?” She couldn’t let go of the fear that Mark would go to any lengths to get her back.

“Yes. It’s you he wants. He’s still hanging around here somewhere.”

Tristan’s words struck a chord.

“What? Has he tried to contact you?” He frowned and leaned away.

“This morning, before you arrived,” she pushed up on her elbow, “I was out on the balcony. There was a man dressed in surf shorts and a hoodie. I couldn’t see his face, but—” Issi fell back on her pillow when her head spun and her stomach lurched.

Tristan pulled her into him. “I’ll get onto it. I swear no one will ever harm you again. I’ve failed you once—I never will again.”

Issi pushed away and angled her head. The look on his face was that of a weeping angel. Her heart broke. Dripping from his eyes were worlds of regret, anger, and self-loathing. She slowly leaned in and did the only thing that could make it a little easier.
